Can I just say that I might have found a new favourite show to binge watch. I am talking about ‘The Get Down’, a Netflix Original that offers me some seriously amazing 70’s fashion moments.
‘The Get Down’ focuses on a group of teenagers that live in New York in the late 1970’s. Being surrounded by poverty and violence in the Bronx they are creating their own creative outlet and experience the early beginnings of the Hip Hop genre. The show offers a unique and eclectic mix between a meaningful storyline and astonishing musical performances.
Costume designer Jeriana San Juan did a great job of creating beautifully crafted items that set the tone for the show. The one fashion item that caught my eye the most was the denim jacket Jaden Smith’s Dizzee wears on the show.
The denim jacket is grungy and fun at the same time. As NYMag put it: ‘Raiding the school arts-and-crafts cupboard has never looked so chic.’ So let’s get right into it!
What you will need:
- a denim jacket (I used my DIY customised denim jacket)
- thread in different colours (e.g. black and white)
- as many different buttons as you can get (I used about 80 buttons in total)
The only skill you need for this tutorial is to know how to sew on a button. In case you don’t, here is a very simple tutorial that shows it step by step.
Before you start, you have to decide how many buttons you want to use and how you want to place them on the fabric. I personally like the look of a lot of different sizes colours and materials combined because it adds to the crafted appearance I was going for.
Then you simply start sewing the buttons on one by one. The process is easy but can take some time depending on how many buttons you are attaching so plan accordingly. Once you are happy with the look of your denim jacket you are done.
Let me know what TV shows you recommend and if you’ve been influenced by a character’s style before.
I hope you get inspired!
